History
1999
At the start of the year,
DC
Holmes went undercover in a women's prison (Follow Through); DS Daly suspected that DS Beech was taking bribes
- but ended up in a canal for
his pains (Walking on Water); and PCs Hagen and Garfield spent a
day at the races looking after a jockey (The Wrong Horse). Boyden nearly ruined his
career when he inadvertently slept with an under-age girl (No Love Lost);
and
Garfield was re-united with a local crime reporter when he tried to identify a
headless corpse (Murder, What Murder?).
PC Quinnan almost died after
being stabbed by a group of youths (Badlands); the relief were determined to
find the perpetrators (Eyes Everywhere) and Quinnan tentatively returned to the
beat (Out and About). A young teenage girl accused
Ashton of making her pregnant (Kiss Chase); Boulton was suspected of
murdering a villain (A Question of Trust); and Carver was forced back into
uniform due to the policy of tenure and replaced by DC Glaze (Makeover).
Brownlow,
Conway and Meadows went on an outward bound course (Tinderbox); and Rosie Fox returned as a Sergeant
in the Murder Squad (Old Flame) in a 4-part story in which PC
Santini committed a murder - Fox caused his demise. Meadows and Skase travelled to France on the trail of a double murderer (Foreign Body); PC Rickman
joined the station (Borderline); and Garfield (pictured) asked Nurse Delaney to marry him
(Heavy
Plant Crossing) - unfortunately she only had eyes for PC Quinnan.
New arrival PC Smith locked horns with Ashton (Taxed) - subsequently Ashton decided to leave the force - blaming himself for being unable to prevent a suspect killing his daughter and then himself (Cracked Up). A bomb was planted at Sun Hill (Critical Mass); Rawton was in despair when an ex lover of hers claimed to have Aids and was trying to infect prostitutes (Ring a Ring of Roses); and Rickman skipped work for a day at the lido but ended up helping Harker (pictured) solve a case (Sun Hill Boulevard).
PC
Nick Klein (pictured) arrived at the station and became rapidly involved in a tricky
undercover operation to expose a racist officer at Barton Street - as a result
of which he lost he girlfriend and got a nasty scare when he was almost caught
buying grass (Integrity Parts 1 & 2). Poisoned oranges and peculiar
theories posed a problem for new DS Claire Stanton on her first day in CID (Millennium);
and Ackland, Boyden and Cryer were at each other's throats over the death of a
prisoner in their custody (The Three Sergeants). Quinnan and Garfield
clashed when Quinnan admitted he was having an affair with his girlfriend, Nurse
Delaney (Love and War [Part One]); and Garfield, scarred by the whole
situation, decided to leave the force (Love and War [Part Two]).
DCIs
Burnside and Meadows took a gamble when they set up an undercover operation in a
local casino (Hot Money); Boyden's estranged daughter asked him
for protection (Father's Day); and Skase was the laughing stock of CID
when he was abducted and robbed by a gang of teenage girls (Sweet Sixteen). Carver
(pictured) lost a lot of friends when it became clear to the relief how
self-interested he was; he developed a drinking problem (Denial), which
Burnside later discovered (Cover Stories), as did the rest of the relief
(Up In Smoke [Part One]), having to cover for him when he arrived at the
station roaring drunk (Up In Smoke [Part Two]). Carver later went
missing, and fears for his safety grew when a youth was arrested in possession
of his credit card (Consumers). He eventually hit rock bottom when
Burnside was forced to arrest him for murder. He was later cleared of the
charges and went into rehabilitation (Lock In).
Hollis organised Quinnan's stag night (A Night To Forget); and Quinnan
and Delaney finally tied the knot, with Garfield turning up at the ceremony to
give the couple his blessing (A Day To Remember). Lennox and Rawton
were
drawn closer together when a dangerous ghost from Rawton's past returned to
haunt her - after a harrowing abduction, she decided to leave Sun Hill (Judgement Day). CID dealt with ghosts,
clairvoyants and messages from beyond the grave when CID went on an assignment in an abandoned factory (Haunted); Rickman was torn
between her job and her friends as she became increasingly friendly with a drug
user (Blowing It All Away); and CID joined the uniform beat as Sun Hill
helped police the biggest night of the century - the eve of the new millennium (All
Change).
